West Ham are preparing a bid of around £26 million for Flamengo midfielder according to reports from Brazil. According to Radio Globo, the Hammers are looking to plug the hole in their midfield by splashing big on the Colombia international.

West Ham finished midtable after a testing season which was filled with injury to key midfielders. Jack Wilshere and Carlos Sanchez signed in the summer had little impact as both players spent more time on the injury table than on the pitch.

It is thought that Pellegrini wants to add midfield reinforcements and has identified the 26-year-old as an ideal player for the team. Cuellar is considered as one of the top central midfielders in Brazil and has been a key part of the team since arriving from Deportivo Cali in 2016.

Cuellar is known as a tough tackling midfielder in the ink of Manchester City Fernandinho who can break down opposition attacks and launch quick counter-attacks. He is also good in the air which is a key attribute for any defensive midfielder coming to England.

West Ham have shown in the past that they are not shy of spending big with the record £36 million spent last summer on Brazilian winger Felipe Anderson.  It would be no surprise if the club spends big on Cuellar this summer.

The Hammers have also been linked to Mohammed Diame and Fulham’s midfielder Jean Micheal Seri which shows that the defensive midfield position is seen as a problem by the club.

It is thought that the transfer for Cuellar could be delayed as the club are currently deep into the Copa Libertadores competition.

Flamengo has experienced goo form in this season as the club have been able to leave rivals such as Botafogo behind with their consistency.  This transfer looks most likely to occur at some point in the summer.
